I strive to be a lifelong learner, and sometimes that looks like traditional learning with graded assignments, engagement with teachers and students. But sometimes learning looks like just keeping eyes wide open. So, why not both?
June 24-29: Finally getting to read before bed! If I set a bedtime, this helps.
June 23: Returning to one of my fave places to volunteer is one way to learn, right?!
June 21-22: Books packed in boxes… but still taking a book/notebook everywhere I go, so?
June 19-20: I miss reading!
June 18: Fun to use an old personality book, encouraging me to write my own.
June 17: So many books to give back to fam, too.
June 14-16: Parted with more books but okay with it.
June 13: Going to try to de-screen by 10pm for the next week.
June 12: Brought one book camping. We’ll see how this goes.
June 11: Just got rid of most of my books. So many memories but the right thing to do.
June 10: Reading before bed!
June 9: Reading before bed. I keep bringing books to trails and just can’t stop walking. Gotta sit! And enjoy!
June 8: Decluttering even more books. So many for the Little Free Library.
June 7: Gotta set an alarm to stop phone use and trigger bedtime reading.
June 6: Read poolside!
June 5: Reading and decluttering before bed!
June 4: Despite the gift of time, still didn’t read.
June 3: Which books to keep? Time to make a list.
June 2: Reading is great after screen time… So a timer?
June 1: Time to get back to my reading routine.
May 31: Driving home, no reading or learning. Boo.
May 30: Me: Brings 2 books on vacation. Also me: Doesn’t read much. At all.
May 29: Exploring is trumping reading right now.
May 28: Reading over vacation?
May 27: If my cousin can make time for self-care via reading, so can I. Oof.
May 26: Sleep or read?
May 25: No screens tonight!
May 24: This week’s an entire lesson on organization.
May 23: Should be studying! Instead, prepping for the week ahead. Hmm, opportunity cost at work.
May 22: Despite a day without a screen, it still called at 11pm, when I should have been sleeping.
May 21: More classes?
May 20: Need a screen break.
May 19: I miss reading! Hope to read before bed.
May 18: What if… I got rid of all the not fun books? Would I instantly regret it? Or would I love the cleaned space? Minimalism is about space, but it’s not just about the absence of stuff.
May 17: Studying design is fun. And hard.
May 16: More studying and reading tonight!
May 15: Unexpected time by myself = reading outside!
May 14: Another day without reading. Boo.
May 13: Choosing sleep over reading.
May 12: Reading right after 10pm? Okay!
May 11: Pooped, so no reading. Sorry, Fitz.
May 10: Making a regular habit of daily reading, aiming for 50 pages/day. Reading good ol’ F. Scott.
May 9: Can’t wait to learn more design! And about to finish another book tonight!
May 8: Finished the AI course’s lessons, but because of the block, I extended the assignment deadlines. Worth the certificate for about $50? Idk. I don’t like leaving things unfinished… Onto reading before 10pm shortly!
May 7: AI course almost done! Wonder how it’ll be recorded since the quizzes are blocked without payment?
May 6: Can I read a book every 5 days? Good goal for the month, to actually return to 10-10:30pm reading?
May 5: Read early to finish a book (took about a week with my bedtime routine)… onto another one.
May 4: Reading before bed, squee!
May 3: Going to attempt to read before bed, but I know this first pre-6am day means hitting the hay early.
May 2: 1 more week of AI course, then onto the InDesign course! So many uses for marketing automations.
May 1: Definitely needed that book time tonight, even with a 6ish morning coming up.
April 30: 2 classes now!
April 29: Did a different kind of reading but still learning, right?
April 28: Treating myself to more reading tonight since I missed yesterday!
April 27: So much screen time. No reading time.
April 26: Guess who’s reading before 10pm?
April 25: Reading shortly before bed!
April 24: Took more of the AI class, but still disappointed there’s a paywall blocking the ability to “complete” the assignment.
April 23: Screen free, starting at 5:30, woo!
April 22: Feels good to give books away, too.
April 21: Reading in pockets again, but putting my face in a book shortly too.
April 20: Working on the computer/video chatting with my bro before bed is okay if I read beforehand, right?
April 19: Took more of class, video chatted with my cousin. So much screen time today, but still reading by 10:30.
April 18: Strange, this Coursera course does not let audit-only students get the results from the quizzes and therefore makes it look like we didn’t complete the course/that week’s homework.
April 17: Weaved reading in throughout the day!
April 16: Chose reading over screening tonight. Introverted Friday success!
April 15: Guess who’s reading by 10pm?! Nerd alert!
April 14: Loving going to “bed” early to read for an hour! Helps boost the morning, too.
April 13: Think I’ve mastered my new bedtime routine! Going to aim to turn off computer by 10:30pm so I can hypothetically sleep/read longer.
April 12: Started AI for Everyone on Coursera, and once I’m done here, I’m reading! I’ve been turning off all screens by 11pm. Maybe I’ll get an actual alarm clock too?
April 11: Read before bed last night, and going to try reading at 11pm tonight. Finished the Moralities class yesterday, so I signed up for… AI for Everyone!
April 4-10: 2/7 days getting a screen-free evening, 1 with reading. 2/7 days working on class, loved and Aced it. What should I take next?
April 3: 1 more week of the class after all.
April 2: Working on class until 2:30am. Felt like a kid again!
April 1: Reading and finally starting the last season of Man in the High Castle.
March 31: Spent most of the evening playing board games and life-talking so loving this screen-free time!
March 30: Yesss, I think I’m back to reading! After work, I exercise then read. Screen-free habit stacking!
March 29: Onto a classic satire… and the last week of my morality class!
March 28: Woke up early to finish a satire today!
March 27: Took class and read today!
March 26: An hour of class today. It’s about connecting religion and politics to morality. Love it!
March 25: Feeling the weight of not doing homework throughout the week. But I can still get ‘er done AND enjoyed reading, so? Opportunity cost feels like a win/loss.
March 24: 2 hours of off and on reading in one night? YES. Guess I was just missing a book that grabbed me? That wasn’t “productive”?
March 23: Reading before bed again!
March 22: Reading! For fun?! Yes!
March 21: More Moralities today, this time on how much we understand about the origins of morality and empathy. Definitely impacted today’s blog.
March 20: Today’s lecture was taught by the prof of my first class. Cool to see her in a slightly different environment, focused on altruism in non-human animals.
March 19: Today was marvelous, but I am going to reserve some of that good energy for tomorrow. Glad I studied yesterday.
March 18: Studied for an hour! On a Thursday!
March 17: Definitely wasn’t screen-free. Definitely didn’t use some of that screen time for my class. Ugh need to pencil this in better.
March 16: I need to read more. Period.
March 15: Studied for 45 minutes today. Booyah!
March 14: Setting a mini-goal to do classwork every other day this week. So, Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Fingers crossed!
March 13: Finally got classwork done, this time on compassion and empathy! Could give that to myself.
March 12: Wrote but should have done class again.
March 11: Intended to walk and listen to the class, but it’s best on PC. Hmm…
March 10: I should be studying today. But I’m pooped.
March 9: Trying to reframe screen-free. Lately, exercise is the only time I’m not. How to add this in? Ideally I’d like to write then read before bed.
March 8: Going to try to take the class for 1 hour/2 days.
March 7: Prepping for tomorrow’s class today. I now know this class takes 1 more hour/week. At least.
March 6: Shouldn’t have taken a break… spent 3 hours on the morality class today, but finished the first week’s with an A and full of new ways of looking at agency!
March 5: Taking in a break!
March 4: Still have homework for the class! Due the 8th. I prefer getting ‘er done Sun-Mon. I don’t like feeling I need to give myself retroactive time. Mon is already done, but I’ll make it work.
March 3: Webinars are for Wednesdays. I like daily learning with alliteration!
March 2: Going to try reading before midnight. Fingers crossed!
March 1: Moralities has a ton of readings! Much different than my first class this year.
February 28: Started Moralities. Looks like a good crossway between psych and philo.
February 27: In the spirit of taking more Yale courses through Coursera, I signed up for “Moralities of Everyday Life” today!
February 26: Marissa helped me choose the category of my next online course… Ethics!
February 25: WIP.
February 24: What course should I take next? I love the feeling of actively learning.
February 23: WIP.
February 22: Passed Yale’s Science of Well Being course today!
February 21: Reading before bed is a marvelous practice, and running feels like meditation!
February 20: Read and had minimal screen time on purpose today!
February 19: WIP.
February 18: Writing each raging thought during my morning meditation helps give it space. Hopefully that means I can let ’em go. Loving this new learning, active look at meditation.
February 17: Applying a learning mindset to meditation with mindful meditation via writing prompt.
February 16: Started and ended today with reading. Also, realized having a growth mindset applies to myself and old habits, too. So I’m improving tomorrow’s morning by preparing the night before!
February 15: Turns out I have one more week. I’m tasked with a growth mindset. Which I absolutely have, even if the growth is not visible. So here’s to attempting to give space to invisible calm via meditation.
February 14: Finishing Yale course tomorrow. Who has ideas for next course?
February 13: Time to choose if I’m buying the certificate for the Yale well being course or not.
February 12: Education still on my brain.
February 11: “3-month classes are nice, but have you considered higher ed?” -Me, every other day
February 10: I spent 9am-12am on a screen (if you count Zumbaing via Youtube). I am exhausted but want to read. I haven’t made bedtime reading a habit yet.
February 9: One short-term class ended today, and I’m going to miss the feeling of learning, first thing. But I can apply this to waking up earlier to work on myself/my book.
February 8: Yale course says I need a reinforcing environment for all goals. I know that, but in a small space, I’m still repurposing.
February 7: Yale course only has 2 more weeks! Suggestions welcome.
February 6: Hoping to read after writing these logs!
February 5: Both classes are highlighting the value of JOY for this weekend’s homework. That’s what life’s about, right? So tonight, I danced!
February 4: Loving the new class. Turning off all notifications is the goal! Don’t have pieces of my mind = peace of mind.
February 3: Started new class today at 9, and loving the live engagement. Even digital can feel “real”! What is that, anyway? And interlaced workouts with reading.
February 2: It’s just past 11:30pm, and I’m about to READ!
February 1: Screen fatigue is real. After work, I took my classes, finished Atlanta, then got steps in. And should have read. But we still needed dinner, and Wes Anderson was calling.
January 31: Reviewing tomorrow’s coursework, and there’s only 3 more weeks left! What should I take next?
January 30: I need to set a beginning time to turn off the phone. And tv.
January 29: Perry’s class requires FB use… Including a video intro. Can’t escape the screen and so used to being behind the camera! I have to learn to separate professional and personal goals, even if they use the same mediums.
January 28: Signed up for a 5-part course with Google Ads expert Perry Marshall, starting in a few days. Even though it’s not long-term, it’ll keep me learning. And it’s early so it sets that week’s intention.
January 27: Discussed my well being class at work! Then saw an ad for the course online. Ah, #googledisplaynetwork, you know me so well. Too well.
January 26: Discovery: If I do something screen-free before reading, it’s an easier transition. Just have to find the right time to make these logs, then… because it’s 11:52pm, and I should be reading!
January 25: I started the Science of Well Being in late December, a Yale course available on Coursera, and I am on the last few weeks. I took the class after work, and the homework assignment of the week is to tell people about my “rewiring” goal… and that is to meditate for 10 minutes after waking up every morning!
January 24: I was so focused on blogging by midnight, I wrote instead of read. Not the same thing.
