I moved to Denver nearly two months(!) ago, and I’m still exploring. Despite the magnitude of transplants, most guides are dedicated to tourism and assume you’re a member of a family. Though I have two awesome roommates and coworkers, I suppose I’m a “young professional”, not necessarily looking for networking. Instead, I’m finding friends. If you’re in the same boat, or you’re just curious how I’m doing, this is the guide for you.
Find a coffee shoppe to begin your exploration
I’ve been using coffee shoppes (and the occasional brewery) as my nucleus and exploring from there. I’ve met a handful of people from these experiences. It shows a shared interest, against $tarb$ (which has a purpose, especially when you’re in a hurry!). I look for one with a patio and nearby attractions (hence the need for caffeine!). There’s often parking, too.
“Pack” these necessities
If you find yourself at a patio alone, bring a book! Not only is it entertaining in between people watching (or befriending), it’s a great way to mark your spot. Other items I’ve learned to bring? Trail mix and water bottle. And that’s in addition to my standard notebook and mask.
Start the conversation
There are so many neighborhoods here, it can get overwhelming. At the coffee shoppe, I’ll ask a fellow patron their favorite restaurant/park/venue. I’ve got a whole list, but some of my faves include: Botanical Gardens flows so well, a whole afternoon can easily be spent roaming while getting steps in; Stanley Market celebrates local with beats and eats in an old airport setting; I suspect I’ll love Mercury Cafe tonight for giving a stage for poets.
Find a group activity… without actually grouping
I’m finding clubs to join, too. I’m thrilled to be co-coaching a club at work, and I’ll be finding a gym with my roommate. I’ll be exploring Meetups too, but admittedly, I am nervous with Covid. Event sites share some Zoom activities, too.
Keep in touch
Last, I am so grateful that a handful of people have stayed in touch with me. There’s no shame in maintaining those connections. With so many creeks and parks, go for a walk and talk. Try FB Messenger, which works for both Android and iphone.
