Omit to Commit is all about the resources needed to opt into (and out of) behaviors, such as time, traditions (individual or group behaviors), trust, and treasures. By regularly making and breaking habits, life becomes more fulfilling and satisfying. I’m drafting a book called Omit to Commit, and in 2023, I’m posting research on the 20th of every month.
A handful of friends have asked me about the format of my book, and I am excited to share here. My goal is to make Omit to Commit a multimedia experience. Starting with the book itself, it will be a journal with tear-away paper, so the contents can be used and tactile. Akin to Wreck this Journal, I want people to be able to use this book. And if that means destroying, so be it.
That is because one of the key functions of the book will be challenges: Ideas for sharing habits on social media, as well as spaces to journal/doodle/list developments. This is because habits seldom exist in a silo. Real change often requires holistic shifts, making development challenging but also more fruitful for life fulfillment.
Challenges can come from myself or others, too. I’d like to convert Omit to Commit into a podcast. Interviewing folks on what/who/where they have committed (and omitted) to is fascinating, and I have already begun. Let me know if you’d like to be featured here! Research beyond what’s in books shows lived experiences. Their voices can come through via podcast and written word.
Building off of my multimedia marketing experience, challenges can be shared via hashtags. This can build a sense of engagement, reminding readers they are not alone. Sharing struggles and successes is what I discussed last time here. Habits do not have to be independent practices. Telling people about your habits can forge accountability, and I have done research on how some rituals become stronger when there are more people involved.
Plus, I just want to hear what you think, and social media and comments on this site help me see what’s useful and not! Since its inception, one of the goals of my website has been to form a virtual community of like-minded people: Many of us are go-getters, often (former) people-pleasers, and learning to say “no” to what/who’s not serving and “YES” to ourselves. While the habits may be different, most folks here are working toward self- and social-change and I’d like to think they find the cardinal ‘omitting to committing’ an interesting, if not practical, tactic.
Therefore, the book is another way to get people reading, going, and actually making change. Readers can come back to this website for more ideas. Because the more I learn, the more I like to share! Transparency and accessibility both matter to me, as seen by values, and this website has been a terrific platform for independent and collective learning. I hope you’re getting something from this tiny corner of the Internet.
So, there’s where I’m at on book formatting, so far. What would you like to see in the book/podcast/social media? Here for you! Thanks for being here for me.
